200 acres of sorghum is ready for harvesting in Kolioro Irrigation Project in Turkana County with 120 acres of maize approaching harvesting. Expected yield in 90 kg bags is 8-10 and 10-12 for sorghum and maize respectively.

Kisumu County Governor, H.E Prof. Hon. Anyang’ Nyong’o, FAAS, EGH accompanied by NIB General Manager/ CEO Mr. Gitonga Mugambi and other Senior Officials of the Board toured Ahero Irrigation Scheme to assess the effect of hailstone rains which pounded the scheme on Monday February 25, 2019 causing 100% crop loss of paddy rice. The Governor pledged a support of 12.5M towards purchase of inputs for farmers to crop again and an additional 1.5M to slash and bale the destroyed crops.

The Boards’ General Manager/CEO issued a waiver on seed and water charges worth 4M and further pledged support in providing seed and water required for the next cropping season. NIB is committed to support farmers across the country to increase, improve and intensify crop production in an effort to realize the targets under the Big 4 agenda on food and nutrition security.

NIB Board of directors and management led by Chairman Mr. Mudzo Nzili and GM/CEO Mr. Gitonga Mugambi toured Ihindu irrigation project in Nakuru county,  Perkerra irrigation scheme and Eldume irrigation project in Baringo county,  Meteitei irrigation project in Nandi County,  Ahero and west Kano irrigation schemes in Kisumu county  to assess progress and production status. The visit also gave them a chance to be able to interact with the farmers who benefit from the irrigation activities that the Board undertakes and also get to know some of the challenges that farmers have.

NIB is mandated to develop irrigation infrastructure for provision of irrigation water to farmers in order to enable them to carry out irrigated agriculture across seasons to enhance food production, create employment and make Kenya a food secure nation in line with the Big 4 Agenda.

The National Irrigation Board (NIB) led by the Chairman, Mr.Mudzo Nzili and the General Manager Mr. Gitonga Mugambi among other members of NIB management held consultative meeting with Governor of Tana River County, Major rtd Dr.Dhado Godana to pitch for a stronger cooperation between Tana River County government and NIB.
This cooperation seeks to promote irrigated agriculture in Tana River County and enhance food security and welfare of its residents. The discussion centered on how to maximize the utilization of NIB land in Tana River by harnessing the huge irrigation potential.
